What Can You Do With A Karambit Knife?

Image
A karambit knife is a dagger used in Southeast Asia with a curved blade with cutting edges on the front and back of its surface. The blade is often ground to have a scalloped or saw tooth pattern for maximizing wounding potential when slashing. The handle typically features an integral hand guard and may include a bolo tie to allow the knife to hook around the user's wrist securely.  These knives were designed as part of traditional martial arts training in Southeast Asia because they could be easily concealed while still retaining the ability to access them quickly at all times. Soldiers and law enforcement officers most frequently use them.  This knife is best described as a forward-curving, fixed-blade fighting knife that is similar to a claw-shaped blade. It is believed to have origins in the Philippines and Malaysia. The primary use for this knife is for close-quarters combat, for both defense and offense. Although there are various forms of these knives, they ge...

Karambit Pocket Knives: Folding VS Fixed Blade Knives

Image
A karambit pocket knife is a type of knife that has a distinctively shaped blade with an inwardly-curving point, akin to the shape of the letter "J". The grip of the knife is created by two outwardly-curved prongs near the hilt. This design makes a karambit easier to use one-handed and more controllable than other knives with normally-shaped blades. Named after its prototype, which was designed by Kwame Karamoko in West Africa, it is popular among martial artists and Western special forces. The karambit has been adopted by the military and police forces of such countries as the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. During the Cold War, Cold Steel marketed a version of the knife that incorporated an injection-molded plastic handle with a gripping surface pad. The company claimed that this design reduced the chance of the knife being damaged in skydiving accidents by lessening stress on the blade edge when dropped from great heights.  However, this "ruggedized...

Self-defense With A Karambit Pocket Knife

The blade on the karambit knife varies in length and shape, but most of them have two to three sharpened edges that can be used to cut tough material or make incisions. In order to achieve a smooth cut, the cutting edge always must be kept very sharp by regular honing or grinding of the blade with coarse stones.  These edges are very thin, but it’s not recommended to use them for cutting objects that will put stress on the blade. The sharpened edge on this type of blade is also highly susceptible to chipping if it’s used for prying. The handle of the karambit knife is similar in appearance to that of a kukri or machete, but with a guard added near the hilt with finger holes through which you can grip with your fingers facing forward or backward depending on how you hold it. It also comes with a ring at the end of the hilt that can be used as a finger guard or to attach items like lanyards.
